Other Disorders

There are no hard-and-fast, scientifically proven guidelines on when to stop the antidepressants when treating OCD, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, the eating disorders, PTSD, ADHD, OCD-related disorders, and other disorders. However, the unwritten rule that most doctors follow is to recommend a period of continuation medication, just as if they were treating depression. In fact, patients with panic disorder do better if their continuation therapy goes on for a year or more. After the continuation therapy phase is completed, the antidepressant may then be weaned, depending on the individual and the diagnosis.

As a rule, out of all patients with disorders other than depression, the ones most likely to do well after stopping an antidepressant are those whose symptoms are of recent onset. Disorders like ADHD and premenstrual dysphoric disorder are ongoing and persistent, and therefore require maintenance medication. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for any of these other disorders to become ongoing and persistent, and therefore require maintenance medication. All over the world, doctors who have used these medicines for years agree that some people with these disorders need maintenance medicine indefinitely, just as some people with depression need maintenance medicine indefinitely.
